SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
Ervin Laszlo on his Worldshift Network website (http://www.worldshiftnetwork.org/action/background/article/8.html) listed nine unstated beliefs underlying modern consumerism:
1. Everyone is separate and rightfully pursues just his or her own interest.
2. Life is a struggle for existence; only the fittest (meaning the wealthiest or most powerful) survives
3. In the ruthless competition for fitness the ends justify the means.
4. The more money you have, the better you are (and very likely also the happier).
5. People owe allegiance only to one nation and one company—the rest are strangers and competitors.
6. If we want peace, we must prepare for war.
7. Technology and efficiency are the answer, no matter what the question.
8. For all intents and purposes the Earth is an inexhaustible source of resources and an infinite sink of wastes.
9. The environment can be engineered like a settlement or a highway to fit our needs and demands.

There are a number of organizations that are trying to gain a critical mass of people in order to set up a dichotomy for debate (currently, one that is essentially non-existent). The debate would be between conventional economists, business people, and politicians who make the claim that we can grow our economy forever while at the same time having a healthy environment, and those of us who, like Daly (1996b), know that, “It is impossible for the world economy to grow its way out of … environmental degradation.” (see, e.g., http://apbbc.bc.ca/files/BioNews17-4.pdf; Page 15). The Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) has some excellent information if you want to know more about the steady state economy and the undesirable effects of economic growth (www.steadystate.org/CASSEBibliography.html)
or would like to join the many professional and other NGOs and individuals

who have taken a position on the fundamental conflict between economic growth and environmental protection and the provision of ecosystem services. I would encourage you to sign the petition there but it will take more than just signing a petition, of course. Working hard to get other groups agreeing with what is the root cause is another action step; there is so much evidence available now.
